Following the PAK vs SL Asia Cup match, India overtakes Pakistan on the ICC ODI rankings

A recent change in the ICC ODI rankings occurred after PAK vs SL Asia Cup match Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka. They slipped to third place as India overtook them.

It’s safe to assert that the Asia Cup 2023 did not play out according to Pakistan’s plans. Despite entering as the No.1-ranked ODI side and arguably the most balanced team, they have exited with more questions than any top side. The Babar Azam-led squad began well, emerging victoriously against both Nepal and Bangladesh, only to be dealt a heavy defeat by their arch rivals India during the Super 4 stage. To make matters worse, they were unable to secure a crucial victory over Sri Lanka in what was ultimately a nail-biting clash which concluded through DLS method with two wickets in favour of Sri Lanka on the final ball.

Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, two of Pakistan’s premier fast bowlers, were injured during the Super 4 match against India and are suspected to miss the start of the ICC World Cup 2023 on October 5.

However, Pakistan’s problems do not end there. Despite their No. 1 ranking being short-lived as Australia dethroned them by winning the first two ODIs against South Africa, Pakistan has now lost their second ranking as well. As a result of Pakistan’s defeat by Sri Lanka, the ICC ODI rankings have changed. Pakistan has dropped to third place as India has surpassed them.
